Aqara unveils its first Thread devices for HomeKit at CES 2022

At CES 2022, smart home accessories maker Aqara unveiled two new sensors that support Thread. The new window and door sensor and thread-based motion sensor are expected to ship in the second half of 2022.

Aqara’s new Thread products are designed to provide consumers with enhanced connected home experiences with increased compatibility, reliability, energy efficiency and security.

As part of the announcement, Aqara also reiterated its commitment to adopting the Matter smart home standard, stating that it will provide Matter’s support for its existing Zigbee-based products by pushing a live update to the hubs. Aqara such as Aqara. Hub M2 and M1S.

This update will in turn expose the accessories connected to the Aqara hub to Matter, allowing them to connect to other third-party devices compatible with Matter and allowing users to keep their existing configuration intact.

Aqara’s new Thread-based product line offers users an additional option to enter the Matter ecosystem. As one of the mainstay connectivity technologies for Matter, Thread enables IoT devices to natively connect to Matter.

For those unfamiliar with it, Thread is a low power, hubless wireless mesh networking protocol designed for the Internet of Things. Similar to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, Thread allows your smart home accessories to communicate with the internet, apps, or each other, giving you convenient controls and the ability to automate your home over an IP network.

One of the best parts of Thread is its ability to “heal itself”. Instead of each device communicating directly with your mobile device or Wi-Fi router, Thread accessories pass commands and data to each other and can automatically redirect if a device drops out of the network.

Matter is a smart home connectivity standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and other big names in tech. It is designed to increase interoperability between smart home devices on all platforms and it is designed to work on technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, and Thread.

No pricing has yet been announced for Aqara’s new thread-based window and door sensor or motion sensor. Given the low cost of its existing HomeKit devices, we still expect them to be affordable, even with Thread’s new capabilities.
